The Labor Party's Interim National Council (INC) met in Washington, D.C. , on January 23 and 24, 1998. Top items on the agenda included adoption of delegate selection and voting allocation for the Labor Party's First Constitutional Convention; adoption of an electoral strategy for consideration by the convention (see page 8); organizing strategies; and discussion of a new Labor Party healthcare campaign.
A report on organizing included the recent contributions of $10,000 each from the Service Employees International Union and from the International Union of Electrical Workers, which also sent an observer to the INC meeting. The INC discussed proposals on growing the organization. The Council will take up a specific proposed constitutional amendment on organizing structure at its next meeting on June 19-20, 1998, in Pittsburgh, PA.
Mark Dudzic, chair of the Founding Convention Rules Committee, submitted proposals for delegate selection and voting allocation for the First Constitutional Convention to be held November 13-15, 1998. The Labor Party Constitution provides that delegate selection rules be developed and adopted by the National Council.
In other business, the
Council recognized state party organizations in New York, Ohio, and New Jersey and decided
on a date and place for the next chapter convention -- November 12, 1998 in Pittsburgh,
directly preceding the convention. The INC also established a financial practices
committee and adopted a requirement that all state parties and chapters incorporate.
