The Labor Party
Organizing Notes
& Short Takes
We're
Growing!
-
UNITE’s Greater New York and New Jersey Joint Board has voted
to affiliate with the Labor Party, reports LP organizer Bob Brown.
The Joint Board represents some 12,000 garment and other workers
in the Metropolitan Area. UNITE’s Midwest Regional Joint Board
has already affiliated.
-
SEIU Local 73 in
Chicago, which represents some 25,000 health
care, public service, security, and social service workers,
recently voted to affiliate with the Labor Party. The local’s
president is Tom Balanoff.
-
Other new affiliates include
International Association of
Firefighters Local 437, American Postal Workers Union Local
4871,
and AFSCME Local 2858.
-
Local LPs Growing:
The Labor Party’s Committee on Organizing (Ed Bruno, Lisa
Frank, Gloria Mattera, and Gaylon Tyler) have been in touch with
most LP local organizations in the past month to check on how
organizing is going and to consult on local organizing plans. (Here
are our complete lists of endorsing
unions and Labor Party bodies).
They report progress. Since the November LP convention, the
Salt Lake City LP has increased by 47 percent; Detroit by 46
percent (see the interview with Margaret
Gutshall); Pittsburgh by
45 percent, and Albuquerque by 42 percent. The New York Metro, Los
Angeles, and Chicago LPs have also grown considerably.

Labor Party’s program and strategy and, he says, "We got a
good reception."

Disaster Relief
The Farm Labor Organizing
Committee, a Labor Party affiliate, is calling for contributions to relieve farmworkers in the wake of Hurricane
Floyd. The union reports that in some areas of North Carolina, the
pickle and sweet potato crops have been devastated, leaving farmworkers without work or even enough money to return home.
Please send checks to FLOC, 1221 Broadway, Toledo, OH 43609, earmarked for "NC hurricane relief."

A
Call for 100 Volunteers
It takes money to build this party and advance our agenda.
Several months ago, we asked 100 Labor Party members to step forward with a contribution of $1,000 to help pay for
desperately needed additional staff.
A growing number have answered our call, some with a lump sum
and others with incremental payments.
We believe we can reach our goal of one hundred $1,000 contributions if everyone
who can give, does give.
If you want to see a powerful Labor Party in this country, please consider a $1,000 contribution
to help us make it grow.
Please make out your (non tax-deductible) check to:
