Education on the Ballot

The Massachusetts Labor Party, having persuaded voters in three communities to overwhelmingly approve nonbinding referenda for Just Health Care, now plans to put public education on the ballot as well.

Labor Party organizer Ed Bruno says LP activists in up to ten communities may petition to put the following resolution before voters this November.

"Shall the representative from this district support legislation that equitably invests state funds in local public schools for quality education; reduces class size; excludes use of voucher programs which siphon funds from public education; bars for-profit schools from public funding; suspends the MCAS [standardized test] as the criteria for promotion or graduation, and establishes an authentic and fair assessment system of education progress for our students and their schools?"

This ballot question will be a tougher sell than Just Health Care, predicts Bruno. But, he and other LP activists believe, with education privatizers trying to snatch away public dollars for their for-profit education schemes, now’s the time to start a Labor Party Campaign for Public Education.

A Call for 100 Volunteers

The 2000 elections are a harsh reminder of how desperately we need a political party to represent the interests of working people. The problem is, we need money to grow. And unlike the Democrats and Republicans, we’ll never get a cent from corporations.

In each issue of Labor Party Press, we have called for 100 members to contribute $1,000 to the Labor Party. And each issue, new volunteers step forward. We’re extremely grateful to all of you.

If you have not yet given, and you are in a position to contribute $1,000, please do it right away. Your dollars will help us build a powerful Labor Party that can offer working people a real political choice.
