Labor Party
Builds Statewide
Coalition For
Just Health Care
|
The Labor Party Seattle Chapter has been
building a broad, active Just Health Care Coalition in
Washington. Below, Paul Bigman, chapter co-chair, provides a
brief update.
The Labor Party-initiated Just Health Care
Coalition of Washington (JHCC) recently gained endorsements
from the Washington State Labor Council, the King County Labor
Council (Seattle), Washington Citizen Action, and District
1199NW/SEIU. These add to affiliations from a broad range of
labor and community organizations.
On October 3, JHCC will hold a community
hearing on health care justice, co-sponsored by coalition
member Washington State Jobs with Justice and conducted by the
Jobs with Justice Workers Rights Board. The hearing, to be
held at a major African-American church, should help to
strengthen JHCC’s community base. We will also hold a
"leadership breakfast" on Just Health Care with
labor and religious leaders.
The JHCC was asked to conduct a workshop on
Just Health Care at the recent Washington State Labor Council
convention, and will soon conduct a Just Health Care workshop
for the public.
Since May, JHCC has been sending a four-page
monthly newsletter, Just Health Care News, to over 600 people
and organizations.
In addition to the Just Health Care work, the
LP Seattle Chapter recently sponsored a forum on the 2000
elections that was videotaped by a statewide public service
cable channel. They aired the program several times. The
reaction to the forum has been uniformly positive. The chapter
will hold a second, post election forum in late November.
